University staff and students can make copies as an individual. University staff can make copies to distribute among your students. However there are strict guidelines that must be followed to prevent copyright infringementRemember a copy can be a photocopy it can also be article you scanned or an image you downloaded.
Photocopying and Scanning by Individuals
Photocopying by individuals of a single copy for their own use for non-commercial purposes or private study is permissible under the ‘fair dealing’ provision of the Copyright, Design & Patents Act. The copying must not be more than a “substantial” part. This limit is not defined in the law but is generally understood to be
One Chapter or 5% of book
Up to 10% of a short book of less than 200 pages
One article from any one issue of a journal or conference proceedings
One poem or short story of no more than 10 pages from an anthology
What is outside the scope of the licence?
Scanning by individual follows the same guidelines as photocopying. You would be infringing copyright if you distributed the copy via email or allowed other to view the copy on the internet e.g. WebCT
