Research news : March 2012

Re-skilling for Research

RLUK has published a major report by Mary Auckland on the changing needs of researchers and the effect on the subject/liaison role within libraries. As research activities evolve, research support must evolve with them. RLUK has been keen to determine what the new requirements of researchers are, and how best these needs can be met by the library.
http://www.rluk.ac.uk/files/RLUK%20Re-skilling.pdf

What do researchers do? Labour market information from Vitae

Labour market information (LMI) is an important career guidance resource, providing context, data and practical information to inform the career decision making process. The Vitae What do researchers do? series of publications inform researchers studying and holding doctoral qualifications, as well as researcher developers, on the career destinations of doctoral graduates. These publications have expanded the range and nature of labour market information available to researchers and also offer insights into the labour market based on individual career stories.
http://www.vitae.ac.uk/policy-practice/107611/What-do-researchers-do-.html

JISC survey on electronic thesis availability in the UK

Doctoral theses can attract significant attention when made openly accessible in electronic form according to the respondents of a sector-wide survey of information professionals. The JISC-funded survey gives a clearer picture of progress toward electronic thesis deposit in the UK, and how universities are achieving it.
http://www.jisc.ac.uk/news/stories/2012/02/theses.aspx
Research news: February 2012

University Library Researchers' Event - Jan 31st Cambridge
"Getting Published in Journals and Textbooks"
The University Library held a well-attended event for researchers on Jan 31st.
Stephen Moore, Reader in Social Policy, spoke about getting published in journals, giving us some useful insights gleaned from his long experience of the activity. Dr Jonathan Wilson, Senior Lecturer in LAIBS, told us about his experience of textbook publishing with Sage and his success with "Essentials of Business Research", 2010. A second edition is now in the pipeline.
Judith Wells, our Customer Services Manager, Cambridge Library, reminded researchers about our Inter-Library Loan and Document Supply Service, and Margaret March, Assistant Director Academic Services, gave an update on ARRO, our Anglia Ruskin University Research Repository.
For those of you who missed the event, the powerpoint slides from the key speakers are available here.

http://libweb.anglia.ac.uk/academic/files/How%20to%20Get%20Published.ppt
We hope to hold a similar event in Chelmsford in the Spring.

National Centre for Research Methods
The National Centre for Research Methods (NCRM) is a network of research groups, each conducting research and training in social science research methods. Their website offers research news, opportunities for researchers, and details of training resources and events. http://www.ncrm.ac.uk/TandE/online.php

Open Access
An interesting report by Alma Swan on the impact of open access. This was commissioned jointly by SCONUL and RLUK. It sets out the evidence on increased impact for researchers, greater profile for institutions and the economic benefits for society.

See http://www.sconul.ac.uk/news/OAbriefing for a copy of the report.

Worldwide theses in open repositories via OAIster.
Use the ‘advanced search' at http://oaister.worldcat.org/advancedsearch .
Change the ‘content' menu to ‘theses/dissertations'. You may also select other filters such as date and language. Click on the title to open the record. You may have a link in ‘find a copy online' to open and view the item.
Vitae EE Hub: Leadership in action - 12 March 2012 - 14 March 2012
This event is being hosted by the Vitae East of England Hub in collaboration with regional universities and research institutes.
This three day residential course has been Vitaes most popular event ever since its launch in 2009. It allows researchers; postgraduate students and research staff in the early stage of their career (post-doctorates and early career researchers) to explore and develop their leadership skills. Participants have the opportunity to look at relevant theory, practice their unique leadership styles and receive feedback.
