Early English Books Online (EBBO)

EARLY ENGLISH BOOKS ONLINE (EEBO)

This database contains digital facsimile page images of virtually every work printed in England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and British North America and works in English printed elsewhere from 1473 (date of the first book printed in English by Willam Caxton) to 1700.

Access
The database is available on the library website (http://libweb.anglia.ac.uk) via the link to the Digital Library. (NB. EEBO cannot be cross-searched with other databases)

Follow the log in instructions for Digital Library and either click on 'Find Database' for the alphabetical listing of databases or choose 'SubjectSearch' and find EEBO within English Literature.
Click on EEBO.

Searching
Keyword Search searches for your keyword(s) within the full record. You can use Boolean operators (AND/OR/NOT) to refine your search. EEBO is not case sensitive.

If you enter multiple search terms across different fields the search fields will be combined using AND

For example:
Citation keyword: fights at sea
Subject: naval battles
Will search for fights at sea AND naval battles

Use double quotation marks to perform an exact phrase search e.g. "the quick and the dead"

However, typing two words together will automatically be treated as a phrase e.g. walter raleigh finds works with this as a phrase only.

Search results
The order is alphabetical by author and then alphabetical by title. You can sort your results by choosing an option from the pull down box.

Click Refine Search to return you to the search screen so that you can add further search terms

Click on the relevant symbol (key is in the black tool bar at the top of the page) to access the part of the record that you require.

Click on Context of Matches to find out where your keywords appear in the text.
You can then access the relevant text.

Marked list
You can create a list of results which you can then print, email or download.

Remember, this list will not be retained once you have logged out of EEBO.
