Wireless FAQs
Where is the wireless network available?
Wireless networks are available in all our libraries: Cambridge, Chelmsford, Fulbourn and Peterborough. These are called:
- open-access - Cambridge, Chelmsford and Fulbourn students can use the open-access wireless network which is available throughout each of the campuses. This is accessed using your Anglia Ruskin username and password.
- guest-access and guest-access-secure - These networks are available free of charge to visitors who are visiting our University on official business, are attending a University event, or who are covered by recognised reciprocal access arrangements. A username and password is needed for access, which you can obtain from either the Cambridge or Chelmsford IT Help Desks or from the library at Fulbourn.

Can I ask for help in installing equipment?
Help Desk staff can advise and suggest suitable equipment, they can also advise on connecting to the wireless network. What do I do if I cannot connect?
If you are having trouble connecting to the wireless network contact your local Help Desk in person or telephone them. During busy periods it may be necessary to book an appointment,
our staff will undertake to resolve the problem you are encountering, however we limit this to 20 minutes per person.
Will I be able to Print from my laptop?
Currently there is no printing available on a wireless network connection. If you need to print you can save your printing to your Home (H:) drive or a memory stick. You will then be able to use one of the Student PCs to print your work.Do I need virus protection?
Students are responsible for ensuring that their PCs are protected against intrusion by virus or other similar attack. We
also recommend that you keep all your software up to date.Anti Virus Software page
What other issues must I consider?
Students can connect to the wireless network at any time but entirely at their own risk. However when you connect you agree
to the Anglia Ruskin University and JANET (the educational internet provider) Acceptable Usage Policy. (AUP) I have been placed into a restricted zone
Anglia Ruskin University operate a policy where any student who makes numerous internet connections (more than 255) whilst using the wireless network will
automatically be stopped from using the Internet. If this should occur you will receive a message indicating that you have
contravened the AUP and have been placed in a Restricted Zone. You will not be able to access the internet from your laptop
for two hours. This often occurs if you are downloading music using software such as Limewire or if you have do not have anti virus software.
Please telephone the IT Help Desks on 6600 for further advice.
Anglia Ruskin University cannot be held responsible for any damage to equipment connected to either the University networks or electricity supply.
Students are responsible for their own equipment - do not leave anything unattended. Back up your work on a regular basis.
