Assistive technology at the University Library, Chelmsford
- Lifts to all Floors are available for those unable to manage the stairs.
- All routes to the lift and study areas are clear and unobstructed for wheel chair access; gaps between static furniture are wide enough to accommodate a wheel chair.
- All staff are aware of the need to keep walkways clear and free of obstruction.
- Escape routes, emergency exits and safe areas are clearly indicated, unobstructed and accessible.
- The library at the Cambridge site has a fire-safe evacuation lift; evacuation chairs are available near all upper floor emergency exit paths in the libraries at the other sites.
- It is University Library policy that all duty librarians are Fire Marshal trained and are aware of the procedures for the evacuation of mobility impaired customers.
- Staff are available to assist customers to access materials.
- Adjustable height desks/ tables are available in public areas.
- There are kick steps located on all floors to assist customers access higher shelves, and these can also be used for seating to access lower shelves.
- Hearing loops are installed at service points and in teaching and meetings rooms in the libraries at the Cambridge and Chelmsford sites.
- Signage is clear and in non-serif characters. It is located for visibility from as many directions and heights as possible.
- WC facilities are available on the Ground Floors of all sites, either within the library area or easily accessible near the entrance to the library.
- Parking near the library has level accessibility to the building.
Liaison and co-operation with Student Services
- Details of students with disabilities are notified to us when an assessment is made. A note is made on the student’s record and the appropriate Academic Services staff are notified. Students are recommended to make an appointment with the Assistant Librarian for your subject to discuss their needs.
- Appropriate arrangements can also be made to enable disabled students to attend information skills sessions and appointments.

Customer Support
- Internal library publications can be produced in a number of formats e.g. electronic copy or in large print format.
- Photocopiers can be adjusted to increase or decrease the size of print being copied.
- Staff will copy materials for customers when needed.
- Copying to coloured paper is available on request.
- Receipts for photocopying can be given for customers to reclaim photocopying costs.
Staff Awareness and Training
- It is University Library policy that all staff attend Disability Awareness Training sessions arranged as part of our University’s internal training programme. Training sessions offered include Disability Awareness, Dyslexia, Hearing Impairment, Visual Impairment and Mental Health Awareness.
- The University Library also arranges in-house Training Hour sessions on disability awareness.
Web access
- The University Library web site displays correctly in all the mainstream web browsers, but if customers have any problems accessing any part of it they are invited to contact us via our Online Enquiry Service.
- The web site has been checked with several popular screen reader and magnifier packages to make sure that it is available to customers with these facilities.
- Customers can use the features available in many web browsers to change the text size, fonts, colours, and look and feel of the entire site. Instructions on how to do this are available on the University Library web site at:

Assistive technology at the University Library, Cambridge
- An online catalogue with large keyboard and rockable mouse is situated on the Ground Floor. It is mounted on a height adjustable desk and has an optional height adjustable chair.
- A PC with text enlargement software, rockable mouse and large screen is situated on the 3rd Floor. It is mounted on a height adjustable desk with attached arm supports and has an optional height adjustable chair.
- A CCTV (a magnifier which can also change the colour of text and background) is situated on the 3rd Floor. It is mounted on a height adjustable desk and has an optional height adjustable chair.
- The Library contains a number of bookable rooms equipped with large screens with a zoom feature, enabling viewing of DVDs/videos. Staff can assist customers with the equipment.
Assistive technology at the University Library, Chelmsford
- An Assistive Technology Room is sited in the Library. This contains a computer with software designed for visually impaired customers, a facility to scan text and broadcast or download it, and a CCTV magnifier.
