Digitisation Service

The Digitisation Service can make it easier for students to access reading materials by obtaining electronic versions of book extracts or journal articles that the library only has in print or does not own.

Digitisation is integrated with ReadingLists@ARU, so students can access digitised extracts directly from the module reading list. These take the form of PDFs, for maximum compatibility with accessibility software (screen readers, etc.)

All requests will be subject to the terms of the Copyright Licensing Agency (CLA) Higher Education Licence and any copyright restrictions specified by the publisher and therefore must not be shared by any other means outside the reading list or the direct link provided (see below for further details). Digitised extracts are valid for one academic year, with the opportunity to renew in subsequent years.

UK Partner Institution staff may be entitled to digitisation requests if they are teaching a course with students who will be reported on ARU's annual HESA return. Please contact a Subject Librarian for further details.

Requesting digitisation

Our digitisation guide explains how Lecturers and Course Administrators can place a digitisation request from the module reading list. The cost of obtaining digitised extracts, including any copyright fees is paid by the University Library.

If a chapter/ article is already available electronically via the library website, please link to it from your module reading list rather than submitting a digitisation request.

Copyright

Any digitised extracts made available to students must be covered by the terms of our Copyright Licensing Agency (CLA) Higher Education Licence. This means that:

  • All digitised extracts must be requested from the Digitisation Service. Please do not scan items yourself or add PDFs of digitised extracts to Canvas
  • We can only obtain digitised extracts from publications covered by our CLA Licence. Occasionally we may need to reject a request if we are not permitted to scan the publication
  • The limit we can provide is usually one chapter from a book/ one article from a journal issue OR up to 10% of the total publication (whichever is greater).
  • We can only provide digitised extracts for modules delivered to students reported on ARU's annual HESA return

For further information or advice please see the Digitisation FAQs or contact digitisation@aru.ac.uk.
