Library Charges and Fines

Charges for late return or renewal of items
Ask Us Fines - Why?
We charge fines for late return and late renewal of items to ensure that a person who borrows an item from the library does not keep it indefinitely, preventing other users from having access to it.

Fines - How much?
Standard loans25p per day
7 day loans50p per day
24 hour loans50p per hour or part of an hour
70 day loans25p per day
Note: the maximum fine for an individual item is £10.00 for each period overdue

How to check if you have fines
  • Online via 'My Account' – 'Cash transactions'; you will need to log in on the homepage of the library website. Fines accrue on a daily basis. Fines can only be paid once you have returned or renewed the item.
  • If you are having difficulty with your loans please make contact with the library as soon as possible.

How can you avoid fines?
  • Always check and keep your receipt when you borrow items as it shows the dates when they are due for return.
  • Check your loans online via 'My Account' on the library website; Please note that if items are wanted by another person you will be unable to renew them.
  • We send a courtesy email to your university email address before your items are due back. You can set your university email to forward to a personal account. We do not guarantee email notices so always keep a check on your due dates.
  • It is your responsibility to ensure that loans are renewed or returned on time

What happens if you don't pay your fines?
  • Further loans will not be possible while you have an outstanding fines charge on your library record
  • Fines of over £20 prevent you from renewing your items online
  • You will not be awarded your certificate and you may be excluded from your graduation ceremony if you have outstanding library charges on your account

What happens if you lose an item?
If you lose or damage an item you will be charged for a replacement. Please note that if an item is overdue for more than 60 days it will be considered lost and you will be charged accordingly.

The charge will be the cost of the item + £5.00 administration fee

If you subsequently return the item you will be charged the fines that have been incurred + £5.00 administration fee, but not the cost of the item. Please note we reserve the right not to accept the subsequent return of an item if a newer edition has since become available or if we have already purchased a replacement copy.

  • Cash
